Fun, pressure-free ways for families to build movement into daily routines
The Government has launched the ‘Let’s Move!’ campaign, supported by Sport England and celebrities like Joe Wicks, to encourage families to stay active together especially during the colder, wetter months when activity levels often drop. Research shows that 57% of parents anticipate a decline in their children’s activity during the autumn and winter months. The campaign addresses the fact that over half of children aren’t meeting the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity, and many parents underestimate how much exercise children need.
As 80% of parents believe their activity habits influence their child’s activity levels, it’s clear that they are important role models so the initiative offers simple, fun and pressure-free ways for families to build movement into daily routines as even as little as 10 minutes of activity can make a positive impact. The benefits of exercise are clear as it is known that regular physical activity boosts mood, energy and concentration, with 78% of parents agreeing that it improves their child’s happiness.
The campaign promotes a variety of activities, from kitchen discos to local community events and playground fun, with the aim of making movement enjoyable and accessible for everyone.
The Body Coach, Joe Wicks provides some great top tips for making movement fun and easy and advises families to:
“Get outside, whatever the weather: A brisk game of tag or a trip to the park can warm everyone up and kids see it as play, not a chore. So wrap up and get out there!”
The ‘Let’s Move!’ campaign is part of a broader government initiative to reduce physical inactivity, with over £900 million already committed to improving grassroots sports facilities. The goal is to make physical activity an everyday part of family life, ensuring children are active, healthy and happy.
