Future-proofing a Devon school playground, one upgrade at a time

The brief

Situated close to the Devon coast, Seaton Primary School enjoys beautiful spacious grounds with lots of play equipment for pupils to enjoy, however, coastal environments can weather wooden play equipment prematurely and so the school was looking at a phased upgrade to their playground – as each piece of equipment wore out, they wanted to replace it with stronger, more durable play equipment.

The plan

After listening to the school’s plans, we advised using recycled plastic as it is the ideal material to use in coastal locations as it does not rot and it resists algae growth which can occur on wood play equipment. We designed two large freestanding play trail items to fit into the footprint of the old equipment – a zig-zag balance climber and an up-‘n’-over clamber frame provided exciting physical challenges aimed at key stage 2 pupils.

Our recycled plastic play trail is available in grey, black or brown profiles and the school opted for brown to complement their existing playground equipment.

The result

The children are thrilled with their new play equipment as the pieces offer a more exciting physical challenge than the older play equipment items. Pupils have to negotiate large wobbly spheres on the zig-zag climber and love perching up high on the up-‘n’-over clamber frame.

Operations Manager, Deborah Wibberley, is pleased the school has been able to invest in sustainable materials and is already planning to install additional recycled plastic play equipment when funding allows:
“Using recycled plastic is a strong long-term investment. Reusing waste materials supports environmental responsibility and as the plastic does not rot, it means our play equipment will remain durable for many years. The Proper Playgrounds team brought a wealth of helpful ideas and the high-quality equipment is thoughtfully designed. All works were completed within the tight timescale of the autumn half-term break.Simon was my main contact throughout and was fantastic – from initial discussions through to installation. Communication was excellent at every stage, and the quality of both the products and service has been outstanding.”

Play trail equipment similar to this project would cost approx: £9,500 ex VAT.
