Situated on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, the village of Walkhampton has a thriving village hall and a beautiful community playing field which is at the centre of village life. The Management Committee wanted to improve the play opportunities for younger children and were keen to install some new dynamic and physical play equipment.
The Committee was convinced that using recycled plastic was a good idea as they wanted to install sustainable play equipment that can cater for generations of children to enjoy. Working within a fixed budget, each piece of equipment was carefully chosen to provide maximum play value, for example, rather than installing individual swings, a swing set featuring a toddler, junior and nest swing was chosen as a more cost effective solution. Play towers with different routes on and off provided an exciting physical challenge and the new balance trail was designed to develop balance and co-ordination skills. Of course a play park is never complete without a roundabout, so a mini-roundabout offers spins and turns for younger children.
Families in the village have been delighted with the new playground equipment. Parents of pre-school age children said they use the park even more now there are enhanced activities available for young children and the playing field continues to be a highly valued community space firmly situated at the heart of village life.
