Modest aims, large gains for Somerset village play area
Modest aims, large gains for Somerset village play area
The brief
The parish council had worked hard to secure a vital green space in the heart of the idyllic village of Shapwick, as their vision was to create an exciting new playground where local children and families can play and socialise without needing to travel. A pristine green field was a perfect place for a play park and the council had allocated funds to start the first stage of the project.
The plan
Proper Playgrounds was awarded the tender as the council wanted to install high quality, low-maintenance equipment and our recycled play range met the brief perfectly as it is extremely tough and requires virtually no maintenance. The play equipment fulfilled the council’s preference for using sustainable materials as the equipment is manufactured using waste plastic which would have ended up in landfill had it not been repurposed.
Phase 1 of the project included a set of multi-swings which provided excellent play value as it caters for a wide age range of children. There are infant and junior swings, plus a nest swing to offer ‘invisible inclusiveness’ as parents/carers can sit alongside children to play. A mini-adventure trail was installed at a low height to provide a fun balance challenge for younger children.
The result
The new play park has proved really popular and has already become a key focal point in the village.
Shapwick Parish Council has already begun to plan and fund raise for the next stage which will include a multi-user climbing frame so that lots of children can play together at the same time.
Cllr Paul Rogers is really pleased with the play equipment:
“It was great to work with Simon and his team – their enthusiasm, attention to detail and helpful suggestions really made the difference and so I would recommend them to any organisation wanting to plan a new playground.”
A similar playground project would cost approx: £12,000 ex VAT.
